Sarah is the ceramic artist behind Hellespont Ceramics. She was born in the Gulf and has moved between countries throughout her life, with New Zealand as a constant base. Travel has been a defining influence in her work; she draws inspiration from the places she’s lived and visited, as well as her love of mythology and history.
She studied Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design and has a background in analog photography. Her work consistently explores contrast, adornment and aesthetics as the function of art. In ceramics, Sarah is drawn to clean, classical forms, subtle textures, and a rich yet restrained sense of maximalism shaped by years of moving between cultures and aesthetics.
Hellespont Ceramics is named after the strait where her favourite myth, Hero & Leander, was based; the Hellespont, or modern-day Dardanelles. Making ceramics allows the artist to revisit her favourite stories and places and reconnect to them through the forms she creates.
